Measure the room – Before doing any purchasing and cutting it is always best to first do the measuring. In order to purchase the correct carpet size the measurements will need to include both the width and length.

Prepare the floor – Make sure to sweep and mop the floor first. Test the floor for squeaks and other damage. You will have to repair any damaged areas you find. These will only damage your carpet when not properly fixed.

Install tack strips – Tack strips should be placed along the wall’s edge. Do not install them in front of door openings. You have to maintain about 1/4″ space between the walls or baseboard and the tack strips.

Install the carpet pad – In order to protect the carpet and give it cushion you must install a carpet pad. Starting along one wall, roll out your carpet pad or carpet cushion. You have to make sure that you overlap the tack strips a few inches. Make sure you have no wrinkles in your pad. To prevent it from bunching you can tape along the seams. Every couple of feet make sure to staple the pad thoroughly. When the carpet pad is secured, use a carpet knife to cut the excess padding along the tack strips. Your pad should not overlap the tack strips.

Install the carpet – Same as installing the carpet pad, roll out the carpet along one wall making sure you leave an excess of about 3 to 4 inches that should overlap along the walls. When using more than one section of carpet, it is important that you create a seam. Use seam tape placed under the seam for this effect. You can use a steam iron to melt the adhesive to fasten the ends of the carpet onto the seam tape.

Tack the carpet down and trim – Tack the edges of the carpet in the space between the baseboard and tack strip before trimming. The knee kicker will be used to fix the carpet to the tack strips. Use a power stretcher to stretch the carpet over the tack strips. Now the carpet may be trimmed, use your carpet trimmer and trim only the extra along the wall. The edges of the carpet need to be tucked with the stair tool now. You can’t neglect the doorways; prevent fraying by installing door edge strips.

When you have finished installing the carpet, it is important that you also vacuum the carpet.

Follow certain steps in order to make carpet installation easy and fun. If you use the tools and materials you should, you will get the result you desire.
