Rio De Janerio Becomes First South American City To Host Olympic Games

Apr 26th, 2010 Posted in sports | no comment »

South America will host the Summer Olympic Games for the first time in 2016, as Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was awarded the honor on Friday. Rio beat out the US choice of Chicago, Illinois along with Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain to earn the right to host the games. Despite a high pressure effort from the American power elite–including President Barack Obama and TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey–Chicago was the first city eliminated from contention. Tokyo was the next to go, before Rio got the nod over Madrid in the final round of balloting.

Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, got the better of his US counterpart with a passionate speech that stood in marked contrast to Obamas typically baleful collection of talking points. The Brazilian leader stressed the unfairness that South America had never hosted the games in his speech to the committee;

“It is a time to address this imbalance. It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country.”

The Olympic committee was apparently swayed by this presentation and paid no mind to Rios many downsides. It is without a doubt the most dangerous of the finalist cities, where drug cartels and armed bands of thugs roam without impunity. Well do to Rio citizens are used to removing watches and jewelry before they drive anywhere lest they be targeted by carjacking brigands. Rios murder rate is also one of the highest in the world. Brazilian bid officials have stressed that security will be a priority at the games and it better be lest the Olympics turn into a bloodbath.

Some IOC members suggested that the summary dismissal of Chicagos bid was more of a rebuke of the notoriously corrupt USOC. The last two Olympics held in the US were tainted by crime and corruption. The’96 Atlanta Olympics were disrupted by a terrorist bombing, while the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games were marred by a well known bribery and corruption scandal.

Necessary Snowboarding Expertise For The Awkward Set

Apr 26th, 2010 Posted in sports | no comment »

Snowboarding is super-fun, but it takes balance, timing, and quite a lot of guts. Without a healthy disregard for your own personal safety, no one would ever head down the slope. If you’re an amateur or irresponsible, it is easy to get hurt. Here are some secrets to make your first experience more pleasant.

First, check a weather report. The best weather for first-timers is something close to a blizzard. This will give you smaller class sizes, and something soft to land on, (i.e. LOTS of snow). You will fall down a lot as you learn, so you definitely want a soft landing.

Don’t go too early in the season. The snow will not be thick enough to provide enough cushion. Don’t go too late in the season, or the snow will be mostly ice just below the surface, and ice is no fun for falling on.

Do NOT ask a friend, boyfriend, or girlfriend to teach you. This will end up in frustration, because chances are, they are not trained in how to TEACH, no matter how skillful they may personally be at it.

Also, this is not a skill you can ‘pick up’. You will have to be taught, so don’t go out on the slopes and just ‘give it a whirl’. You will probably end up hurting yourself and others too. That is one of the hardest things to learn: sharing the snow means you will have to learn how to avoid other skiers and snowboarders.

The best way to learn is from trained professionals, that is, the instructors you find at the ski slopes. Sign up for a class, and don’t be daunted by the fact that your classmates are six year olds. If you find that intimidating (or embarrassing) go for a private lesson if you can afford it. Private lessons are not that much more expensive than a class, and the one-on-one instruction can’t be beaten.

Pay attention to what the instructor tells you, in a class or in private lessons. They are paid to know what they are doing and to get totally awkward people to do this. Try doing exactly what they tell you to do, and don’t over-think it. It is in their best interest that you succeed, so they will do all they can to help you.

Remember that if you do follow all the instructors suggestions and you’re still not ‘getting it’, you can always ask the resort for a refund or do-over. It is in their best interest that you succeed (and come back again and spend more money). They may not automatically accommodate you, but it never hurts to ask.

The thrill of snowboarding attracts all kinds of people, particularly after the Winter Olympics. Start your adventure off with a little knowledge and a little prudence, and then go have a wonderful time!

Checking out snowboard tricks is a great way to spend some time in the season, so learning those tricks is a great way to get yourself some of that attention. The Growth of Slip on Sneakers

Dec 12th, 2009 Posted in style | no comment »

It seems like the variety of slip on sneakers available for purchase is widening by the year. With new patterns and styles offered by a growing number of companies, the selection of these shoes becomes larger and all the more appealing.

The charge was led by Vans, as the classic Vans slip on sneaker really popularized the style. Since then, many apparel makers have jumped onto the bandwagon and it seems like the trend is still picking up steam.

With any trend comes a wider variety of options, and this has been a great thing for any fan of this shoe style. Not only will you find the ones that go with skater gear, but you’ll find slip-ons that look great with just about any outfit. Even Burberry has a slip on sneaker being offered for sale now.

The reasons for the appeal to slip-on sneakers should be obvious anyway. They’re very easy to put on and take off, and they’re extremely comfortable too. When you combine the comfort and convenience with the fact that they can look good, this adds up to a winning formula.

Due to the wide range of styles and patterns available, slip-on shoes can be worn with almost anything short of formal wear. Some of them even even go well with shorts.

If you’re looking to buy a pair of these shoes, I’d suggest doing your shopping online. It’s true that you’ll find a bunch of different styles if you look locally, but the variety is much wider if you look online.

There are so many online retailers of sneakers to the point that you may even be overwhelmed when shopping for your slip-on sneakers. Just about every major shoe company has a slip on sneaker for sale. Some of my favorites are made by Converse and New Balance, but you’ll see many more brands than just these two.

You’ll find that they’re really affordable too, and the best prices can be found online. I’ve seen slip on sneakers selling for less than $30, though the ones made by Burberry and others will sell for a lot more. Whatever the case may be, you should have no problem finding a great pair of slip on sneakers.

Popular Halloween Ideas in 2009

Nov 20th, 2009 Posted in style | no comment »

Halloween is coming up. Have you gotten your costume yet? If you haven’t, you’re not alone. In fact, most people wait until there are a few days left before the actual holiday, fighting through the long lines to find a costume at the last minute.

Do you really want to end up browsing through a crowded Halloween store at the very last moment, rummaging through the remains of the costumes that everyone else pushed aside? No one does, but we just as easily find ourselves in that kind of situation every year. Try to avoid this in 2009 by acting early.

If you’re still having trouble figuring out what to be this year, I’d like to offer you a few suggestions that might serve as inspiration for the costume you eventually decide to go with.

1. Michael Jackson. Not only can you be the King of Pop, but since so many are honoring the life of this mega star this year, you can choose to be Jackson from a certain era.

The great thing about a Jackson costume is the many different eras you can choose from. You can choose an earlier Michael costume, or an outfit based on his later years.

2. Barack Obama. Why not dress up as our commander in chief? What better way to get some laughs out of your friends? For the ladies, the Michelle Obama costume is a great idea.

Yet another idea is to dress up as Susan Boyle, the singing sensation who gripped the world with her unexpected talent. This is a pretty simple outfit to craft, and you’re guaranteed to get some compliments on it.

Whatever you decide to go with, I hope that you enjoy your Halloween. Good luck to you, whichever road you should choose to go down. I have no doubt that you’ll end up wearing something great.

Free Legal Advice

Sep 28th, 2009 Posted in insurance | no comment »

If you have been accused of a motoring offence, then you will need to quickly prepare a defence before you get charged. Many areas of the law are almost open to interpretation and so the accusing side must complete every stage of the process correctly or it is likely that you will have grounds to contest the claim.

If you believe that the particular circumstances under which you committed the driving offence should exempt you from some or all of the punishment, then you can make a Special Reasons argument. These are most commonly used to avoid bans in drink driving cases, however they are sometimes used to avoid penalty points for other offences as well or driving through a red light.

When you argue Special Reasons, you have to give evidence under oath in order to persuade the Magistrates that in the circumstances, it would not be fair to put any points on your licence. The most common ground put forward is that the offence was committed in the context of an emergency, for example if you were rushing somebody to casualty and you went through a red traffic light or exceeded the speed limit.

If your case is found to have a Special Reason, then you will not be given any penalty points. There are however no strict guidelines as to what constitutes a Special Reason, but it must fall under one of the following:

1. A mitigating or extenuating circumstance

2. It must not amount in law to a defence to the allegation

3. It must be directly connected to the commission of the offence

4. It must be something that the Court ought to take into consideration when deciding what punishment to impose.

You will find information about the Special Reasons argument and its guidelines in section 34 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act of 1988.
