How I Got My DVD Player

Oct 27th, 2010 Posted in hobbies | no comment »

I was out having lunch with a couple of friends of mine the other day. We all decided to go to the famous restaurant downtown that is popular with movie stars and astronauts. It is one of those restaurants where they play music while you eat. You can either order off the menu, or you can ask the chef to prepare something for you that is completely unique.

Then some guy came over the loudspeaker and said they were going to be giving away several prizes and gifts. As it happened, this particular day was the restaurant’s ten year anniversary. They were going to give away gifts to thank the customers for their ultimate loyalty to the restaurant. They had some strange method of choosing the winners, which was based on this big tank of fish they had in the corner. I was very excited.

With a huge cheer, they unveiled the prizes. And the biggest prize was a fantastic looking portable DVD player. In recent times, these technological marvels have become exceedingly popular, and for some very good reasons. One of the most popular uses is to use them on long car trips. They kids can watch their DVDs in the back, completely oblivious to mom and dad in the front seat arguing over how they should invest for their retirement or something.

And not only families can benefit from these fantastic things. Anybody who finds themselves in a boring situation can easily save themselves some grief by using one of these fantastic portable DVD players. This was illustrated to me in a story by my dining companion. At his college, you could rent many educational DVDs for a very small fee from the campus library. Whenever he found himself in a very boring lecture, he would pop in a more interesting and educational DVD to help him learn the material.

Another example would be jury duty. While most people bring a book or a newspaper, you could be watching your favorite movies of all time while sitting there in the jury duty room waiting to see if your name was going to be called. I’m sure you can see how useful this can be to keep your sanity while waiting in that utterly boring jury duty room.

Naturally I hoped that I would win the portable DVD player, since I didn’t have one, and both my friends did. When they called the winner of the portable DVD player, and I realized it was me, I was happier than a clam. I will always make it a point, from now on, to eat at that restaurant at least once a week. They now have a loyal customer for life.

The Remarkable DVD Adventure

Oct 26th, 2010 Posted in hobbies | no comment »

So I was out shopping with my friends the other day. It was some kind of big electronics shop, and we were just kind of looking at all the cool stuff. I wasn’t really looking to buy anything, just kind of browsing around on a Sunday afternoon. I think I remember my friend saying he wanted one of those new electric scooters or something. But when I saw what they had in stock, I was amazed.

They had these portable DVD players that you could take anywhere. I never knew they even had DVD players that you didn’t need to plug into a TV. However, these fantastic DVD players didn’t require any external TV or monitor. They were of some kind of advanced technology I hadn’t seen before. These were small, about half the size of a laptop computer. Of course this included the screen also. I was overcome with joy, until I realized you’d have to plug it in to some kind of electrical outlet. These can be hard to find in some parts of town.

But that thought was killed instantly as the helpful sales clerk explained to me that they ran from batteries. Some of these have batteries that run for up to six hours. I started to imagine all the possibilities. I could to sit in the park and watch movies, or go to the library and pretend to study, all the while watching my favorite DVDs. Absolutely and purely fantastic. But wait a second. Wouldn’t the sound from my DVD player bother all the people around me?

That’s when I was in for another shock. Most of these DVD players had their own headphone jack, so you could totally listen in private. Nobody around you would even know what you were watching. They wouldn’t be bothered or anything. Pure genius. And you would be able to hear the sound really clearly above all that music they play at Starbucks. Just as I was dreaming of my future, I thought of another problem. Surely these DVD players must be several hundred, or even a thousand dollars.

That’s when I received the biggest shock of the day. Some of these were less than a hundred dollars! Truly amazing technology at an affordable price. I have that much change in my couch at home! As lady luck would have it, this particular store accepted all major credit cards. I grabbed the best one they had and sprinted to the cashier before I changed my mind. And ever since then, me and my DVD player have been best friends.

Use Only The Legal Film Download Services Online

Oct 22nd, 2010 Posted in entertainment | no comment »

Do legal movie downloads really exist? Until relatively recently, legal movie downloads have not existed on the Internet in any major way. All that is changing fast as many companies and websites are offering legal movie download products.

Firstly, you are probably wondering why you want to download movies of the Internet in the first place. If you are familiar with pirated videos, then you will probably realise that they are lower in quality, and there is the risk of getting malicious software installed on your computer. It is also of course illegal, and could get you into trouble.

However, the prospect of downloading legal movies is very promising. The days of super slow downloads are over. Most of us have fast enough broadband connections to download just about anything of the Internet. Movie downloads are now more viable due to these faster internet speeds.

There are a few requirements that you will need to meet nonetheless, including having a decent broadband connection. Reliability is important, but you should be able to use a download manager to pause and resume downloads. Certainly the download sites should have these built in. Life will certainly be much easier if that is the case!

The convenience is also a very welcome change. No longer do you have to go all the way to the local video store only to be disappointed. If you have slightly diverse tastes in movies, then you will probably find that in the average video store you can’t buy most foreign movies, or older, or more unusual movies.

With a decent movie download website you should be able to download just about any movie you can think of. Anything that requires a monthly subscription should be viewed with suspicion, since a lot of those sites simply give you links to illegal resources yet you are also paying for them.

There are many different formats available as well. Nonetheless, there are only a few formats available which actually work on most players. For example, if you were to download DivX movies, for which most of them are, you should be able to play the more on all sorts of different machines.

If you download DivX movies, you should be up to burn them to a conventional DVD and watch them on any basic DVD player. This is extremely useful of course, and something that most of us who download movies online will want to be able to do. Indeed, DivX is even supported on current mobile phones and portable entertainment systems, making it extremely versatile.

Movie downloads are probably the best and most versatile way to get movies these days. With legal movie downloads now available you can download with confidence.

Secrets About The Failing Public Schools

Oct 20th, 2010 Posted in entertainment | no comment »

The school system may be made to be a great deal profitable, says Bob Bowdon, however entirely at the expense of things comparable to teachers and students. In his documentary “The Cartel,” Bowdon, a New Jersey television news newsperson, turns the camera on the massive degeneracy and misdirection that has led his state to squander more than any other on its students just with substandard results. The numbers express the tale: $17,000 exhausted per student, and there’s simply a 39% reading proficiency rate, it’s tough to argue that there’s a crisis afoot, but harder to concur on a solution.

On the one side is the massive Jersey teachers union and umbrageous school officials, who see to it that that, as Bowdon points out in his picture, 90 cents of every tax dollar go for other expenses, including six figure incomes for school administrators and, in a astonishing example, a school board secretary who makes $180,000. The other faction are the supporters of charter schools, the private schools that can evade the authority of the public school system and would aid inner-city kids if their taxpayer money could be more carefully used. One of Bowdon’s principal criticisms is that a teacher, even a shoddy one, basically can’t be fired — which provides zero effort to do much genuine instruction.

“The movie examines lots of unique aspects of public education, tenure, backing, patronage drops, corruption –meaning thievery — vouchers and charter schools,” says Bowdon. “The label education documentary possibly could sound to some like ho-hum squared, but in fact the film itself betrays an fiery passion for the quandary of particularly inner-city children.”

“The movie first appeared on the festival circuit in summer 2009, appearing in theaters nationwide a year later. Hopefully it will get a rise, and not be overshadowed, by the more recently released docudrama “Waiting for Superman,” by “An Inconvenient Truth” director Davis Guggenheim. Bowdon says the documentaries can be seen as companion pieces: his focusing on public policy and Guggenheim’s taking the human-interest angle. “My picture is the left-brained version, more analytical,” Bowdon says, “‘Waiting for Superman’ is more the right-brained treatment.”

The left-brained stance means arguments that observe the economics — money misspent, opportunities wasted. But that isn’t to say the film is without heart. Bowdon makes certain his eye is at all times on the people affected, principally the inner-city students trapped in a damaged system. A girl’s weeping upon hearing that she wasn’t selected to attend a charter school, that she’s stuck in her public school, represent the failure of a system as well as Bowdon’s charts and interviews.

And though it may be simple to accept the presence of corruption in a state so associated with organized crime, the uncomfortable fact of the subject is that this is a very familiar situation. Any watcher will acknowledge the failings of their own state’s education system and the struggle for control. The one he seems to be most behind is the charter schools, which take the reins from the unions and give them back to the taxpayer. But “The Cartel” also shows us how laborious it’s going to be to get that control back from those who’ve found it so profitable.
