How I Got My DVD Player
Oct 27th, 2010 Posted in hobbies | no comment »I was out having lunch with a couple of friends of mine the other day. We all decided to go to the famous restaurant downtown that is popular with movie stars and astronauts. It is one of those restaurants where they play music while you eat. You can either order off the menu, or you can ask the chef to prepare something for you that is completely unique.
Then some guy came over the loudspeaker and said they were going to be giving away several prizes and gifts. As it happened, this particular day was the restaurant’s ten year anniversary. They were going to give away gifts to thank the customers for their ultimate loyalty to the restaurant. They had some strange method of choosing the winners, which was based on this big tank of fish they had in the corner. I was very excited.
With a huge cheer, they unveiled the prizes. And the biggest prize was a fantastic looking portable DVD player. In recent times, these technological marvels have become exceedingly popular, and for some very good reasons. One of the most popular uses is to use them on long car trips. They kids can watch their DVDs in the back, completely oblivious to mom and dad in the front seat arguing over how they should invest for their retirement or something.
And not only families can benefit from these fantastic things. Anybody who finds themselves in a boring situation can easily save themselves some grief by using one of these fantastic portable DVD players. This was illustrated to me in a story by my dining companion. At his college, you could rent many educational DVDs for a very small fee from the campus library. Whenever he found himself in a very boring lecture, he would pop in a more interesting and educational DVD to help him learn the material.
Another example would be jury duty. While most people bring a book or a newspaper, you could be watching your favorite movies of all time while sitting there in the jury duty room waiting to see if your name was going to be called. I’m sure you can see how useful this can be to keep your sanity while waiting in that utterly boring jury duty room.
Naturally I hoped that I would win the portable DVD player, since I didn’t have one, and both my friends did. When they called the winner of the portable DVD player, and I realized it was me, I was happier than a clam. I will always make it a point, from now on, to eat at that restaurant at least once a week. They now have a loyal customer for life.
