Think of it as Fistful of Dollars set in the ghetto. The movie is really unlike any other. We’ve seen movies where the hero schemes their way out of trouble, rather than fighting or using guns, but rarely do we see a movie where that hero is a ten year old boy, rarely do we see a film with a child hero in a violent situation without being a fantasy family film like Home Alone. Fresh is real, raw, frightening, and fascinating.

It uses a sci-fi premise, but that really is just a set up. The movie is all about what happens after the time traveling robots arrive, it’s not about complex plot lines or anything like that.

He takes early retirement and ends his days as a detective until an old college chum, Gavin, pleads for his help in a private case.

The pace picks up as Scottie is hired to tail Madeleine, Gavin’s wife. She is obsessed with a woman named Carlotta Valdes and visits her grave and portrait each day.

As Scottie shadows her he sees her attempt suicide by jumping in San Francisco bay. He rescues her and they are instantly attracted. They begin a passionate affair and Madeleine confesses a nightmare she has involving a bell tower.

Scottie knows that this is the mission in San Juan Bautista and thinks that she should face her fear. When they arrive Madeleine tears away from his side, runs up the steps to the roof and he is unable to follow because of his vertigo. He hears her scream and is powerless to act.

After her death, he finds it hard to recover. He searches the places they used to visit and one day he meets a Madeleine doppelganger, a young woman named Judy. He is so desperately in love and missing Madeleine that he asks Judy to dress like her. The similarity between them is uncanny.

A climax is where he makes the connection that they are the same person when he sees Judy wearing Carlotta Valdes’ necklace.

He confronts Judy at the mission in San Juan Bautista. The whole thing has been a plot to murder Gavin’s first wife and inherit the money. Judy was paid for her services.

As the couple argue, a nun appears and Judy is frightened by this and plummets down from the bell tower onto the tiles below. Scottie recovers from the vertigo.

This roller coaster of a film is an absolute must for Hitchcock fans and is a classic film which can be enjoyed by everyone.

It’s gritty, raw, and it feels much more real than the two films that preceded it.

The best of the series is still First Blood. First Blood was a very human, real movie, focusing on the disillusionment of the Vietnam Veterans upon returning home from the war. The second and third movies in the series then were sort of insults to the original. While Rambo is certainly an action movie, it also fits some social commentary into the proceedings.

The film attempts to do for the Burmese people what First Blood did for veterans: Tell the truth about what they’re experiencing. Like First Blood, this one is also somewhat excessive and over the top, in that no Vietnam veteran ever really beat up an entire town’s worth of police officers, just as one man with a knife and a pistol could never really do as much damage as Rambo does the guerilla soldiers in this film. However, the truth is in the emotional content of both films.

The movie took a courageous effort to film, and it feels authentic. It’s also explosively violent in a way that is very real. It really drives home the suffering of the Burmese people, and because this is a real conflict, the movie feels much more socially responsible than the second and third films in the series. The end result is a movie that is both enthralling and conscientious.

Rambo does kill hundreds upon hundreds of badguys, so it’s not entirely realistic, but the movie never feels false in how it portrays the way this really happens, what it does to everyone involved. As Stallone says in the trailers “When you’re pushed, killin’s as easy as breathin’”. Yes, but for the characters who have never killed before, and who are now pushed, it’s not something that weighs easily on their souls. The movie never feels like a cartoon.

The film is very pure in the way it develops. It’s really just action with some character development along the way. It’s mythical, Biblical in a way, and is just as pure an action film as classics like Commando, Robocop and The Road Warrior. In fact, it feels like it was made out of time, as if it could have easily been an eighties action film in many ways, back when the genre was in its prime.

It’s exciting seeing Stallone on the comeback trail after Rocky Balboa. After a string of flops, he finally took a moment to remember what it is he’s good at and to try and excel at it. So between this, Rocky Balboa, and The Expendables, he’s really knocking them out of the park on a regular basis over the last few years in cinema.
