Garage Remodeling Strategies For Painting Your Cement Floors

Aug 14th, 2010 Posted in family | no comment »

Most homes that have a garage or basement do have concrete floors. These can be easily finished by painting rather than any other more expensive treatments. You paint your concrete floors not only for aesthetic purposes but also for practical reasons as it makes the floor easier to clean and more durable in the long run. When the painting is done the correct way it will last for years.

Where to Start:

Although it is not a very expensive aspect of your home renovation, it is not something that you can implement on an overnight basis either. In order to begin your painting project it is necessary for the floor to be thoroughly dry. If you have any wet spots, especially in your basement then you will need the help of a professional to correct your seepage problem.

When you are sure that the floor is now completely dry, you can now scrub it to clean residues from chemicals and greases. This is important especially if the floor you wish to paint on is your garage or shop area. This is an important step because if there is any type of foreign substance on the floor’s surface the paint will not adhere.

Actually, scrubbing the floor is a big step and if there is any type of grease on the floor, some kitty litter will absorb most of it. Scrub the floor using Goof Off and then rinse. Now scrub with a mixture of TSP. Now it will take several rinses until you can mop and have the mop remain clean. After about three days of drying, the floor is now primed for painting.

Some final preparations before you start painting:

Using a sander or an 80-grit paper, remove any stuck materials on the surface of the floor and smoothen out the bumpy portions. A tack clothe would also be helpful in removing some residue from the sanding that the vacuum could miss.

Look for and fix any cracks that might be present. Use Cement Fixall to plug these cracks or little holes and be sure to let it dry thoroughly.

Now it is time to paint!

First you will need two applications of a stain blocker and primer like Kilz. Remember that the surface must be completely dry in between the two applications. Now you can apply a top quality latex flat paint. You may need a paint compressor or a roller to make a really fine painting job.

Accessorizing your painted floor:

As a matter of personal preference you may want to make some geometric shapes or use faux stone or whatever you would like. You may run wild with your creativity at this point, just make sure to let the floor dry completely before finishing.

Finishing your painted concrete floor:

To finish your newly-painted floor, apply two coatings of Breakthrough sealer with the use of a quarter-inch nap roller. This is full of fumes so a respirator mask is a must here. Then, of course, let it dry thoroughly.

Now your new concrete floor is done. You may decorate it with some throw rugs or an area rug for some flourish as it is still concrete after all. However, it is now beautiful concrete!

You will also be needing these tools:

Hammer

Tack strip cutter

Knee kicker

Trimmer

Power stretcher

Staple gun

Carpet seam tape

Carpet knife

Before starting the project you have to make sure all the materials and tools needed are complete. Follow these simple steps to properly install your carpet.

Measure the room – Before doing any purchasing and cutting it is always best to first do the measuring. In order to purchase the correct carpet size the measurements will need to include both the width and length.

Prepare the floor – Make sure to sweep and mop the floor first. Test the floor for squeaks and other damage. You will have to repair any damaged areas you find. These will only damage your carpet when not properly fixed.

Install tack strips – Tack strips should be placed along the wall’s edge. Do not install them in front of door openings. You have to maintain about 1/4″ space between the walls or baseboard and the tack strips.

Install the carpet pad – In order to protect the carpet and give it cushion you must install a carpet pad. Starting along one wall, roll out your carpet pad or carpet cushion. You have to make sure that you overlap the tack strips a few inches. Make sure you have no wrinkles in your pad. To prevent it from bunching you can tape along the seams. Every couple of feet make sure to staple the pad thoroughly. When the carpet pad is secured, use a carpet knife to cut the excess padding along the tack strips. Your pad should not overlap the tack strips.

Install the carpet – Same as installing the carpet pad, roll out the carpet along one wall making sure you leave an excess of about 3 to 4 inches that should overlap along the walls. When using more than one section of carpet, it is important that you create a seam. Use seam tape placed under the seam for this effect. You can use a steam iron to melt the adhesive to fasten the ends of the carpet onto the seam tape.

Tack the carpet down and trim – Tack the edges of the carpet in the space between the baseboard and tack strip before trimming. The knee kicker will be used to fix the carpet to the tack strips. Use a power stretcher to stretch the carpet over the tack strips. Now the carpet may be trimmed, use your carpet trimmer and trim only the extra along the wall. The edges of the carpet need to be tucked with the stair tool now. You can’t neglect the doorways; prevent fraying by installing door edge strips.

When you have finished installing the carpet, it is important that you also vacuum the carpet.

Follow certain steps in order to make carpet installation easy and fun. If you use the tools and materials you should, you will get the result you desire.
