Canon Digital Rebel XSi – Review

Jul 25th, 2009 Posted in shopping | no comment »

Regarded as an entry level camera, the Canon Digital Rebel XSi which measures 5.2 x 2.4 x 3.9 inches and weighs 16.8 ounces is available in two different styles. Consumers have the choice of either a silver casing or a plain black casing.

While one certainly cannot argue that the camera has a good grip, some people to feel the casing looks cheap. Of course, others argue that this is simply because of the smooth surface looking as though it’s been made from plastic. Overall, the camera doesn’t feel quite as comfortable in your hands when compared to the vast majority of other cameras. It is also worth noting that previous Canon digital cameras never had the same 3 inch screen as this model. You’ll also notice that the controls are situated on the right hand side of the screen.

Judging from reports, most consumers seem to be at the with the playback images and also the click of the buttons. While a higher resolution sensor has made it possible for quality playback images, some people complain that there is some delay when using the zoom feature.

Viewing the screen from above, below, or even the sides, doesn’t seem to be a problem even when the camera is held overhead. Both the vertical and horizontal viewing angles are Approximately 160 to 170 degrees.

Even though the image quality equation is nothing spectacular, the kit lens is considerably lightweight and needs considering it’s a stabilized lens. Additionally, the rear screen makes it easy to adjust settings and although it doesn’t have a top screen like previous models, it does have a detached status screen on the main screen. Furthermore, ISO value is continuously displayed in the viewfinder.

It has to be said the Canon Digital Rebel XSi is surprisingly fast. The color reproduction is described as excellent and so are the macros. ISO is high and noise level is muted. However, to some consumers there are negatives to take into account. The most prominent complaint is the weak AutoFocus. Some consumers have said the camera does have difficulty selecting the point of AutoFocus. It often gets the point wrong. However, if center focus is utilized it’s almost accurate but the end result still remains a little fuzzy. Not all consumers had this complaint.

There are also some consumers under the wrong impression. They believed the addition of Live View allowed them to utilize XSi / 450 D in the same manner they utilize point and shoot digital cameras in order to create their shots. They are mistaken. The Live View can’t be utilized as a feature without the camera being secure. An even surface or tripod can be used to secure the camera. Some did find both modes for Live View focusing to be too drawn out for shots that are hand held.

Even though the camera does have room for improvement, the fact remains, it is an adequate camera none the less and in the majority of cases, buyers have been happy with the quality and also the features. Furthermore, it appears that many people are also very happy with the ergonomics of the Canon Digital Rebel XSi.

Reviewing the Garmin Nvi 760

Jul 22nd, 2009 Posted in shopping | no comment »

If you are someone who tends to get lost often and directions are Greek to you, someone might have already suggested that you invest in a navigator. That could possibly be the best advice someone has ever given you. Even if it doesn’t happen too often but you do sometimes travel to places that you don’t know, you might want to get your hands on a GPS Navigating device like the Garmin Nvi.

Besides the fact that it is completely annoying to get lost in a place that you don’t know too well, it can also be slightly dangerous, which is why you are advised to get a navigator so you will find your way around a lot easier.

The great thing about the Garmin Nvi 760 is that it looks good and it is easy to use. It looks stylish, so if you mount it to your dashboard it will not look odd and out of place but rather trendy and perfectly in place. You should be able to use it even though you have never used one before as it was designed with everyone in mind, even those who don’t keep up to date with the technology of today.

One thing is for certain and that is; you don’t need to be technically minded in order to use a GPS device such as the Garmin Nvi 760. Instead, you simply have to type in the address of your destination and the device will then immediately let to know how to proceed from your current location.

Some of the features include: preloaded city navigators, hands free Bluetooth wireless technology, 4.3 inch color touch screen, and a white backlight with 480 x272 pixels. Another noticeable feature of the Garmin Nvi 760 is that it displays the speed limits for many of the highways and roads you drive on.

This is a nice feature because the roads don’t always tell you, but you can’t explain that to the Police Officer when they stop you for speeding, now can you? With the Garmin Nvi 760 you have no more reason to not obey the speed limit.

There are also some technical details of this device that should interest a potential buyer, and these include the fact that it has a 12 channel receiver description, an MP3 player capability, it displays a map of North America, it has an amazing five hour battery life, its display size is 4.3 inches, it offers Bluetooth connectivity, and its native resolution is 480 x 272.

The model before the 760 was the 660 and the latest model has more features and offers you more than the 660 does. The 760 would be a better buy than the 660 in many ways, even though it is slightly more expensive, but it costs more because it has a lot more features to offer you. The 3D map on this device is clear and easy to read, and the fact that there isn’t an antenna means it is easier to hook up the Nvi to the cradle.

Is an LCD TV the right choice?

Jul 12th, 2009 Posted in technology | no comment »

Buying a TV used to be relatively simple. The biggest decision you had to make was whether to get a large screen, a small screen, or something in between. Over the past decade, though, new and increasingly complex technologies have emerged that have made the endeavor much more involved. There are two primary competing formats for televisions: Plasma and LCD displays, and as more and more projectors are being designed for the home theater, they too need to be considered.

The most substantial difference between Plasma and LCD televisions is the method for generating the picture. Plasma displays comprise hundreds of thousands of pixels, each of which can be activated separately by an electrical impulse. These pixels release gases that affect the pixels red, green and blue bands to produce most any color in the spectrum. LCD TVs use liquid crystal diodes that, when sparked by an electronic signal, can vacillate and twist to filter the required color, similar in appearance to a double helix. These cells filter out all colors except for the one that is needed from a white light that is produced by a backlight.

It at first seemed that Plasmas were going to prevail as the dominant technology because they performed better in a number of key areas. To begin with, they were able to produce much larger screens that LCDs and do so at lower costs. Their colors were richer and they were more suited to fast moving video playback, whereas LCDs would experience a blurring of quick moving images. LCDs were better viewed straight on, whereas images on Plasmas still maintained a high degree of accuracy when viewed from side angles.

Upgrades and improvements in the LCD format have enabled it to match Plasmas in areas that it had shown deficiencies. LCD TVs also have many clear advantages over Plasmas. Plasmas may have at first been able to boast the largest screens, but they by no means have the smallest. LCDs now have screen sizes that can nearly match the largest plasmas, and they can be made so small that they equip many phones. They are also much more portable. Plasmas are very heavy and often thicker televisions, which makes it difficult to transport them. They also cannot be mounted to weaker ceilings or walls because of their weight.

However, as the technology has been refined LCDs have managed to rectify these shortcomings so that on all fronts they are at least equally competitive with Plasmas, and in many other categories they are far superior. They weigh significantly less, allowing for greater ease of transportation and mounting. They also offer a much larger range of screen sizes. The smallest Plasmas tend to measure 40 diagonally, whereas LCDs go well under 10.

Much like their picture quality over time, Plasmas are slowly fading out. Each of the advantages that they previously held have been met by LCDs, and the one winning factor they had left, their significantly lower price-tag, has vanished as well.

LCDs are producing better and better picture quality, reducing their trailing effect, and becoming increasingly thin and lightweight. They will last about as long as Plasma TVs will before their backlight burns out. At that point it can be replaced. The plasma television fades over time and its pixels cannot be fixed or enhanced. Because of their glass screens they are best used in dark rooms, which makes morning cartoons impossible. LCDs are rapidly outpacing Plasmas and will likely soon make them an extinct technology.

And unless you are giving Powerpoint presentations in multiple locations, projectors do not hold a candle to LCDs.

Halogen Lamps and Their Superiority to Conventional Lighting

Jul 10th, 2009 Posted in shopping | no comment »

Halogen lamps are ideal for most lighting scenarios, whether it’s just to provide general lighting, or for accenting. It is clearly definable by its pearl-essence and it’s particularly lively illumination. It provides a rich light to promote a creative and stimulating work place.

Another benefit of halogen lights is that they allow you to create your own light settings as they come with or without reflectors and in a variety of sizes and colours.

The reason that the halogen gas itself is present in the bulb is to reduce darkening of the bulb by decay of the filament. Tungsten is usually what the filament inside a light bulb is made out of, which is an extremely durable metal in high temperatures, which is why it is used. Despite this, it still very slightly disintegrates over the course of its life.

If it werent for the halogen gas filling the glass casing of the bulb, then this disintegration would result in tiny particles of tungsten collecting on the inside of the bulb. The atoms of halogen inside the bulb collide with these atoms of tungsten and send them shooting back to rejoin the filament, keeping the glass casing clean.

When shone onto a coloured surface, they look brighter and more appealing than they would under normal incandescent light. The usual places you will see halogen lights are places like hotels or retail fashion stores, ideal for bright, pleasant atmosphere and a clean sparkling light.

Halogen lamps can provide extremes of widespread, soft, shadow-free illumination or sharply defined narrow beams thereby allowing creative accents.

With a slightly higher colour temperature, halogen lamps give the light a crisp and fresh appearance compared to standard incandescent light bulbs.

So if you are looking to brighten up either your workspace, or your home, then halogen lighting is the clear way to go as its white pearly dazzle is far superior to the yellowish glow of traditional light bulbs.
