Full HDTV Facts

Jul 29th, 2009 Posted in shopping | no comment »

A popular topic in televisions nowadays is full HDTV (full high definition television). This is due to the full changeover of digital television (DTV) signal on June 12, 2009. With this transition complete, everyone has access to HDTV signal. However, not everyone has HD display because in order to get it, you must have an HDTV display television.

The main advantage and interest in regards to HDTV is the high resolution. If you chose to go with an HD converter box, your television still has an analogue picture on a CRT screen. The resolution of an NTSC-analogue television is called 480i; the “i” meaning “interlaced”. This means that since there are only 240 horizontal lines available in the CRT tube and the TV camera has 480 lines, every other line is scanned at the same time for 1/60th of a second. Then the other lines are scanned. So, to portray a more vertical resolution, the TV signal is interlaced. With an aspect ratio of 4:3, the analogue TV resolution is 640 x 480i.

So how do HDTV and full HDTV differ from analogue TV? Certainly the most obvious feature is the resolution. Standard HDTV has a resolution of 720i or 720p and full HDTV has 1080i or 1080p. The ‘p’ signifies progressive scanning versus interlaced, i.e. all the vertical scans are done at the same time. With a 16:9 aspect ratio in HDTV this results in 1520 x 720 pixels for standard HDTV and 1920×1080 pixels for full HDTV.

It seems that the full HDTV (1080p) would be the most desirable product for optimum resolution and viewing pleasure. However, on televisions smaller than 42 inches in size, the difference in the standard HDTV versus the full HDTV isn’t visible. For this reason, full HDTV isn’t available on smaller TVs. Only standard HDTV (720i or 720p) is available. Hence, a 42 inch screen television or larger is required if you wish to get the benefit of full HDTV.

Three choices of screen technologies are available for full HDTV. These are rear projection HDTV, full HD plasma TV and full HD LCD TV. Rear projection HDTVs are still available but this technology appears on the decline with many manufactures dropping out of the market. Therefore, one is left with full HD plasma TV and full HD LCD TV to choose between. Since a resolution of 1080p is assumed, other factors affecting image quality to consider are response time and refresh rate, contrast ratio and color reproduction.

Full HDTV plasma displays are bright, have a wide color range, and can be produced in fairly large sizes, up to 58 inches is commercially available. Because the display panel is only about 6 cm (2.5 inches) thick, the overall thickness is about 4 to 6 inches. Contrast ratios are as high as 50K to 100K are claimed but, in reality, the highest available in stores is 30K with response times at 0.001 milliseconds and refresh frequencies of 600 Hz. Fast response times make plasma TV’s ideal for fast motion video (films or sports viewing). Plasma screens also are said to have better color reproduction than LCDs and to have a wider viewing angle.

One disadvantage is the power requirements in a plasma TV. The requirements can be as high as 500 watts. In addition, plasma TVs are traditionally heavier than LCD displays. However, the plasma can be mounted on a wall and the LCD display can’t.

Full HDTV LCDs have the same resolution, 1080p, as plasma HDTV. Initially, slow response times in LCD sets could result in ghosting on fast-moving images. However, refresh rates have decreased to about 2 ms with a 240Hz refresh rate. The contrast ratios have also been improved to 30K. Full HDTV LCD’s are less expensive for the high-end systems necessary for full HDTV.

A note of caution, except for resolution, when comparing specifications many reviewers question their accuracy and their meaningfulness to your viewing experience. My advice is judge for your self. In conclusion, barring financial and/or physical restraints or simple preference for smaller TV size, full HDTV is the obvious choice. If striving for a home theatre experience, make sure your full HDTV is compatible with the entire system you are planning.

Review of the Apple MacBook Pro MB990LL

Jul 27th, 2009 Posted in shopping | no comment »

The specs on the Apple MacBook Pro MB990LL laptop include a thirteen inch screen, a 2.26GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo processor and an upgradeable 2GB of DDR3 RAM to 8GB. The160GB hard drive storage and 1280 x 800 resolution image and video display offer clear, concise pictures on the glossy screen. The Apple MacBook Pro offers features that make it one of the more desirable laptops, for many users. Some are not as impressed and others were disappointed with certain facts, however.

It is hard to find anybody who doesn’t admire the uni-body casing of aluminum. Then there are multi-task gestures, Mac OS and overall design that is impressive. The Apple MacBook Pro MB990LL is a beautifully designed laptop. However, this stylish appearance is not enough to convince all consumers. There are those who point out it is possible to get more for less money.

The surface of this laptop is glossy, which has pros and cons. It has been noted that you get superior viewing if lighting circumstances are good, but when lighting conditions were normal, the reflection was too much and created glare. The normal sized keyboard has no number pad. The other complaint was regarding the non-removable battery.

It can’t be denied that Mac OS is superior to other laptops. The Mac OS is responsible for the multi-tasking presentation. Many consumers are convinced this model is an improvement on the first 13″ MacBook in aluminum that was launched. They are also pleased Apple reduced the selling price by an impressive $100.

The seven hour battery life is a definite upgrade on the MacBook Pro, but some consumers report they only got six hours, which was a disappointment. The MacBook Pro’s battery is difficult to remove and the noticeably short power cord was inconvenient. The SD card sticks out too far and most consumers think it shouldn’t be that way.

The disappointed consumers could have been misled with the pre-launch hype of this laptop. Expectations of the MacBook Pro may have been too high to obtain. The difficulty in using the cursor control and the dialog books that were too numerous were complaints that some consumers reported.

The uni-body enclosure is something that all consumers seem to agree is impressive since multiple parts are used to construct other notebooks. Because of the MacBook Pro’s single part construction, consumers consider it to be completely unique and the first of its kind. The uni-body, one piece of aluminum body is fully integrated with the keyboard during the manufacturing process.

It is an unbelievably thin and lightweight laptop that is easily portable, yet strong and durable enough to use indoors or out. The preloaded software includes Apple Mac’s Leopard OS, iTunes, iLife 09, Garageband, iPhoto and iMovie, which many consumers liked and considered a bonus on the Apple MacBook Pro.

Canon Digital Rebel XSi – Review

Jul 25th, 2009 Posted in shopping | no comment »

Regarded as an entry level camera, the Canon Digital Rebel XSi which measures 5.2 x 2.4 x 3.9 inches and weighs 16.8 ounces is available in two different styles. Consumers have the choice of either a silver casing or a plain black casing.

While one certainly cannot argue that the camera has a good grip, some people to feel the casing looks cheap. Of course, others argue that this is simply because of the smooth surface looking as though it’s been made from plastic. Overall, the camera doesn’t feel quite as comfortable in your hands when compared to the vast majority of other cameras. It is also worth noting that previous Canon digital cameras never had the same 3 inch screen as this model. You’ll also notice that the controls are situated on the right hand side of the screen.

Judging from reports, most consumers seem to be at the with the playback images and also the click of the buttons. While a higher resolution sensor has made it possible for quality playback images, some people complain that there is some delay when using the zoom feature.

Viewing the screen from above, below, or even the sides, doesn’t seem to be a problem even when the camera is held overhead. Both the vertical and horizontal viewing angles are Approximately 160 to 170 degrees.

Even though the image quality equation is nothing spectacular, the kit lens is considerably lightweight and needs considering it’s a stabilized lens. Additionally, the rear screen makes it easy to adjust settings and although it doesn’t have a top screen like previous models, it does have a detached status screen on the main screen. Furthermore, ISO value is continuously displayed in the viewfinder.

It has to be said the Canon Digital Rebel XSi is surprisingly fast. The color reproduction is described as excellent and so are the macros. ISO is high and noise level is muted. However, to some consumers there are negatives to take into account. The most prominent complaint is the weak AutoFocus. Some consumers have said the camera does have difficulty selecting the point of AutoFocus. It often gets the point wrong. However, if center focus is utilized it’s almost accurate but the end result still remains a little fuzzy. Not all consumers had this complaint.

There are also some consumers under the wrong impression. They believed the addition of Live View allowed them to utilize XSi / 450 D in the same manner they utilize point and shoot digital cameras in order to create their shots. They are mistaken. The Live View can’t be utilized as a feature without the camera being secure. An even surface or tripod can be used to secure the camera. Some did find both modes for Live View focusing to be too drawn out for shots that are hand held.

Even though the camera does have room for improvement, the fact remains, it is an adequate camera none the less and in the majority of cases, buyers have been happy with the quality and also the features. Furthermore, it appears that many people are also very happy with the ergonomics of the Canon Digital Rebel XSi.
