It’s almost impossible to do so unless you have a book that appeals to a veyr small, select audience – such as a local history.
Try to get a regular publisher if you can. They pay you for your book by giving you royalties – a percentage of whatever the book sells for. In return, they publish (which includes editing, designing, making a cover) promote and market your book.
If you get an agent, you don’t pay them. They get a percentage of your royalties.
There is a very good book, called Writers’ Markets that your local library should have. It lists around 3,000 publishers, in all genres. Read the listings carefully, find the one that best suits your book, and follow their submission guidelines.
Whatever you do, don’t go to ‘vanity’ press. You pay them to publish your book, but they do very little, if any, honest promotion and marketing. It’s a scam.
Promotion and marketing is the really difficult part of selling a book. Most book stores won’t even handle self-published books, so you are really better off to start by trying to get your book published by a regular publisher.
