The Way The Flat Wallet Came To Be

Jan 20th, 2010 Posted in style | no comment »

Wallets are small purses or bags designed to carry small articles such as money, cards and credit cards. Or any other form of identification. It accomplishes this by having small pockets within the wallet that are situated either horizontally or vertically. Wallets are mostly made out of leather or materials similar to leather.

Most wallets will have special see through pocket that can be used, to store an identification card that needs to be shown regularly, and do it without the hassle of taking out all the time. ID’s such as passes or student identification cards are such examples. The see through pouch can be used to store photos also; some wallets can be attached to the belt.

Wallets are of different sizes and varieties. They come under different names such as the bi-fold wallet, tri-fold wallet, and breast wallet and so on. The different names denote the different sizes and uses. Out of all these varieties the bi-fold wallet is the most common. There is a common ancestor for all these different types and it is called a bowgett. The bowgett was used in medieval Europe and it was attached to ones belt.

It was not until the 19th century that the word wallet is first recorded to have been used. But in its first days of use, wallets were not carried to be exposed. Doing so was considered improper. This attitude towards wallets went on until well into the 20th century and nowadays wallets and pouches are regularly carried exposed.

Wallets of all kinds are available on the market today, and there are somewhat new designs available also. One such design is the flat wallet. It is not as “fat” as some of the other type of wallets and there fore it can be stored in ones pants more discreetly than other type of wallets. They achieve the “thinness” by putting fewer pouches in them and by making them with thinner yet stronger material.

Studded Belts Are Not Just For The Goth Crowd

Jan 19th, 2010 Posted in style | no comment »

Belts have been worn since at least the Bronze Age. In its first day belts were strictly part of men’s clothing and stayed that way for a long time and it was not until the middle ages, at least in Europe” that it slowly became a part of women’s clothing. Even then it was not widely accepted for women and that only started at the beginning of the 20th century. Men also for a long time only wore belts as part of a uniform.

Leather and cloth were used in the early days of belt manufacturing and ultimately it was used to hold up ones clothing. Belts can also be worn to follow a certain trend or fashion statement. It comes down to how, when and what type of belt is worn. When women wear them it is most likely to follow a fashion trend, but if you are into the “punk” or “gothic scene then the belt can become more of a statement.

As mentioned before belts original intention was to be part of military uniform. It was not unusual for military personnel to wear belts extra tight so as to give the fit and trim appearance that is associated with the military. When the 1920’s hit, there were some changes in men’s pants designs. The waistline was lowered and the pants were made to be more lose fitting, this is when the use of belts became wide spread.

There are many variations and uses for belts other than just holding up clothes. As mentioned before it became and remained a staple of women’s clothing starting in the 1950’s. Police and construction workers use what’s known as a utility belt, to hold the tools of the trade. A trend some say that started with the cowboys.

Nowadays there are so many different styles of belts, like shoes people will notice a person by the type of belt he or she is wearing. Belts are no longer used just to hold up clothes and to follow fashion. One type of belt that has been popular since the 1980’s is the studded belt. Generally if you belong in a group makes extreme fashion statements, like “punk” or “Goth” then you will most likely own one.

What Are Shears

Jan 19th, 2010 Posted in style | no comment »

The design of two pieces of metal that have sharpened edges and are bolted in a way so that slide against each other for cutting is what we call scissors. Scissors can be used to cut all sorts of thin objects like paper and fabric but the ones we are concerned with is hair cutting scissors.

Shears generally describe a scissor that is larger in size. Basically a scissor that is longer than 6 inches are called shears. The earliest use of scissors was recorded in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Those early scissors were a designed by connecting apair of flat bronze plates by bending the handle which gave it a spring action when used.

When those early scissors were used they would act like a tong or a spring when pressed together and then when you released them it would go back to its original shape.scissors we use today goes back to roman and chinesetimes.Although the older model spring scissors were used until the 16th century

The name scissors and shears are some times interchangeable, but the fact is shears are usually bigger than scissors. Because of that they are used to cut heavier objects. The other type of sheer is attached to a table and the blades are moved with a lever and are used to cut very strong objects like steel plates.

With the arrival of hair styling, came a different incarnations of the scissor and one of them is the thinning shear. It is similar to ordinary scissors but the flat blades have teeth like a comb and it is used for thinning rather than trimming hair. hence the name. Stylists use it after the haircut for people who have thick hair and give the hair a layered finish look.

Helpful Dos And Donts Of Treating External Doors

Jan 19th, 2010 Posted in style | no comment »

There are many types of external doors and there are some tips to consider on treating external doors. Door treatments can be anything from surface finish to curtains on blinds depending on the type of door. Treatments can also be helpful in maintaining the door over the seasonal barrage of climate changes.

Depending on the style of treatment, doors can be treated either before or after they are installed. Most finishes, however, need to be applied before the door is installed. This includes all sealants, stains, varnishes, and preservatives. For the color coatings a primer is a mandatory prerequisite. The regional climate is the primary dictator of the type and frequency of finishes. For instance, the colder more seasonal climates require frequent maintenance.

Some doors, such as French doors, can have unique treatment options. As these doors contain glass, some of these options could include blinds, shades, or curtains. The choice in contingent upon the chosen design. Functionality can also play a role. As a note of caution, any new doors with glass should not be put into contact with any abrasive materials. The sanding or cleaning of the wood should not touch the glass. This can ruin the door.

There are other important tips for new doors. The first thing is to place the door where it is not exposed to any heat, humidity, wetness, or cold. All these factors can affect the shape of the door and warp it, assuming it made out of wood. Upon receiving a new door it is always best to dust down the surface.

In cleaning the surface, typically one uses wire wool or glass paper. The sanding is done in the same direction as the grain. The idea behind this is to remove any scratches, marks, or nubs. Once cleaned, the door needs to be finished. This can be any type of finish recommended by the manufacturer or pertinent to the door and climate. The finish needs at least three coats. A second coat should only be applied once the first coat is dry. In case of multiple doors, one should take the time to mark each one separately to avoid confusion later.

The door finish has to applied before installation. Hinge plates can pose a problem and, therefore, should be removed before any coating are applied. This allows all the edges and surfaces to be evenly coated. The door should also be dry prior to installation. A quick way to check is to see if it feel tacky when touched. Also, bottom sills should be attached before installation, as well. This is different than interior doors that contain space for carpeting and other types of floor coverings.

Exterior doors should be handled carefully in order to avoid any potential physical damage and maintain structural integrity. For example, any shrink wrapping or covering should be kept in place as long as possible. Additionally, if not pre treated, all doors should be sealed, knotted, and primed upon delivery.

Door storage should be done properly. No door should be rested on its edge or end. All doors should be stored flat and raised from ground level by at least three bearers. This protects the door from damage or corrosion and also allows for even air flow. Light exposure should be limited because it can discolor the finish or wood coating. As a final tip, no door should be delivered, stored, or fitted until all wet trades are complete.

If you know about doors, then you would know that there are many different types of external doors. Treating external doors is a bit hard, however when you have the right information, it’s really simple.
