Rio De Janerio Becomes First South American City To Host Olympic Games

Apr 26th, 2010 Posted in sports | no comment »

South America will host the Summer Olympic Games for the first time in 2016, as Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was awarded the honor on Friday. Rio beat out the US choice of Chicago, Illinois along with Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain to earn the right to host the games. Despite a high pressure effort from the American power elite–including President Barack Obama and TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey–Chicago was the first city eliminated from contention. Tokyo was the next to go, before Rio got the nod over Madrid in the final round of balloting.

Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, got the better of his US counterpart with a passionate speech that stood in marked contrast to Obamas typically baleful collection of talking points. The Brazilian leader stressed the unfairness that South America had never hosted the games in his speech to the committee;

“It is a time to address this imbalance. It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country.”

The Olympic committee was apparently swayed by this presentation and paid no mind to Rios many downsides. It is without a doubt the most dangerous of the finalist cities, where drug cartels and armed bands of thugs roam without impunity. Well do to Rio citizens are used to removing watches and jewelry before they drive anywhere lest they be targeted by carjacking brigands. Rios murder rate is also one of the highest in the world. Brazilian bid officials have stressed that security will be a priority at the games and it better be lest the Olympics turn into a bloodbath.

Some IOC members suggested that the summary dismissal of Chicagos bid was more of a rebuke of the notoriously corrupt USOC. The last two Olympics held in the US were tainted by crime and corruption. The’96 Atlanta Olympics were disrupted by a terrorist bombing, while the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games were marred by a well known bribery and corruption scandal.

Necessary Snowboarding Expertise For The Awkward Set

Apr 26th, 2010 Posted in sports | no comment »

Snowboarding is super-fun, but it takes balance, timing, and quite a lot of guts. Without a healthy disregard for your own personal safety, no one would ever head down the slope. If you’re an amateur or irresponsible, it is easy to get hurt. Here are some secrets to make your first experience more pleasant.

First, check a weather report. The best weather for first-timers is something close to a blizzard. This will give you smaller class sizes, and something soft to land on, (i.e. LOTS of snow). You will fall down a lot as you learn, so you definitely want a soft landing.

Don’t go too early in the season. The snow will not be thick enough to provide enough cushion. Don’t go too late in the season, or the snow will be mostly ice just below the surface, and ice is no fun for falling on.

Do NOT ask a friend, boyfriend, or girlfriend to teach you. This will end up in frustration, because chances are, they are not trained in how to TEACH, no matter how skillful they may personally be at it.

Also, this is not a skill you can ‘pick up’. You will have to be taught, so don’t go out on the slopes and just ‘give it a whirl’. You will probably end up hurting yourself and others too. That is one of the hardest things to learn: sharing the snow means you will have to learn how to avoid other skiers and snowboarders.

The best way to learn is from trained professionals, that is, the instructors you find at the ski slopes. Sign up for a class, and don’t be daunted by the fact that your classmates are six year olds. If you find that intimidating (or embarrassing) go for a private lesson if you can afford it. Private lessons are not that much more expensive than a class, and the one-on-one instruction can’t be beaten.

Pay attention to what the instructor tells you, in a class or in private lessons. They are paid to know what they are doing and to get totally awkward people to do this. Try doing exactly what they tell you to do, and don’t over-think it. It is in their best interest that you succeed, so they will do all they can to help you.

Remember that if you do follow all the instructors suggestions and you’re still not ‘getting it’, you can always ask the resort for a refund or do-over. It is in their best interest that you succeed (and come back again and spend more money). They may not automatically accommodate you, but it never hurts to ask.

The thrill of snowboarding attracts all kinds of people, particularly after the Winter Olympics. Start your adventure off with a little knowledge and a little prudence, and then go have a wonderful time!

Checking out snowboard tricks is a great way to spend some time in the season, so learning those tricks is a great way to get yourself some of that attention. You’ll need good snowboarding rails and don’t forget to keep an eye out for girls snowboarding. For all the information you’ll need, please visit our website now.

New York Fans Are Unforgiving

Jul 31st, 2009 Posted in sports | no comment »

You would have a tough time finding fans that are more into their sports than New York hockey fans. These fans are widely known as being the toughest to please. They aren’t content unless their favorite New York team is playing for the top spot every single year. Ask players like one of the famous players who has left about it. These fans are really ridiculous.

The New York Giants have had a nice run in the playoffs for the last number of years. The fans have enough to cheer about. The question about whether or not Eli Manning has what it takes has been adequately answered. I just can’t understand what the fuss is about. You’ve got a decently coached team that always seems to be in the running come the playoffs.

On the other hand are the fumbling New York Jets. The fans have every reason to be upset at this organization. The team let their best performing players go to other teams and then bring in a bunch of under performers. They bring coaches in but don’t keep them around long enough to develop anything lasting. I guess the mindset around NFL team ownership doesn’t put much faith behind the word perseverance. If they did, you would see more teams building dynasties.

One other big time controversy within the New York sports groups is the controversial New York Yankees. With that huge budget being poured out to acquire baseballs best athletes it is easy to see why Yankee fans get fanatical after a bad season. Sometimes there are increased expectations created when that much money is invested.

Mets fans don’t need to worry about these things. They are true baseball fans. The New York Mets are more consistent than their Yankee brethren. The fans know what to expect. They hope for a pennant but don’t expect one every single year. Even though fans are passionate there is less whining involved than compared to the Yankees.

The Rangers and the Islanders represent New York in the National Hockey League. For a New York sports team, neither one of these hockey teams are perennially great. They have their good and bad years just like any other hockey team. If NHL hockey became as important here as it is in Canada, I’m sure you would see some really large budgets come out of those two teams.

Basketball is big in New York. Like every other New York fan, Knicks fans want the Knicks were playing for the title every year. Most years these guys are above average compared to other NBA cities. I guess a reason for that is New York City’s ability to attract people to come live there. People, especially wealthy athletes, love to live in or near New York. There are so many awesome benefits to living here. One of those benefits is having controversial sports teams to cheer for in every major national sport.

What Makes Up The Compound Bow?

Jul 31st, 2009 Posted in sports | no comment »

The compound bow was invented by bow-hunter Holles Wilbur Allen in 1967 at his home state in Missouri. His bow was designed with a leverage system in mind, with pulleys (called cams) and cables to allow the archer to draw the bow easily when the strings were pulled. The compound bow’s limbs are much more rigid compared to the traditional bows, like the recurve and the long bow, which limbs were flexible, therefore easy to draw.

The stiff limbs of the compound bow, usually made up of aluminum and magnesium, are very stiff and virtually impossible to bend without the cams and cables. In its stiff limbs, energy is stored and released when the bow is drawn and the arrow is released to hit a target. The strings are attached to the pulley with one or two cables attached to its opposite limb. When the string is drawn back, the pulleys pull on the cables causing the stiff limbs to bend. Once drawn back, the limbs are ready to transfer the stored energy to the arrow.

Because of the composition of the (stiff) limbs of the compound bow, it was more durable and highly resistant to extreme temperature changes and the elements of nature, unlike its wooden counterparts that get performed unstably when subjected to moisture and other outside element. Thus unaffected by these outside forces, the compound bow remained accurate and more powerful.

Adding to the strength of the compound bow is the sturdiness of its shaft and limbs. The primary shaft of the compound bow is called the riser, made up of aluminum or magnesium, or a combination of both materials that are not only strong but also very light in weight. The more advanced compound bows use the high quality 6061 aluminum used for planes. This material makes the bow’s riser as rigid as possible.

The strings and cables of the compound bow are not made out ordinary steel cables covered with plastic, but are much more high-tech and made from a very tough material called HMPE or high-modulus polyethylene. This material is highly resistant to harmful chemicals, abrasion, is self-lubricating, repels most liquids or moisture, and has lower friction qualities compared to nylon. Its strength is like Teflon that has superior tensile strength and less stretchability. With such materials making up its core components, the stored energy of a drawn bow is able to efficiently transfer the power to the arrow for more accurate and powerful shots.

Lesnar Becomes UFC Champion With Win Over Mir

Jul 30th, 2009 Posted in sports | no comment »

On a historic night for the sport of mixed martial arts, Brock Lesnar avenged his early loss to Frank Mir with a TKO victory and in the process unified the promotions heavyweight championship at UFC 100. Mir/Lesnar was the main event of a stacked card and the culmination of a frenzied week of activity in Las Vegas.

UFC 100 drew unprecedented attention from not only the MMA media but the mainstream sports media as well. While outlets like ESPN have long treated MMA with disdain they were forced by the interest surrounding the event to give it prime coverage.

Preliminary buy rates suggest that more than 1.5 million people purchased the event, which would not only make it the UFC’s biggest PPV ever but put it in the top five of *all* PPV sporting events. While it fell short of the all time PPV record of 2.4 million buys set by the De La Hoya/Mayweather fight, the unprecedented interest has put MMA on the map to stay.

The main event established Lesnar as not only the UFC heavyweight champion, but the most hated ‘bad guy’ in the sport To his credit, he had a perfect gameplan for Mir that allowed him to use his strength and power to maul his opponent on the ground while minimizing his exposure to submissions.

Mir, on the other hand, made a tactical mistake by letting Lesnar put him on his back and pound away. He clearly underestimated Lesnar’s ability to defend his submissions and by the end of the first round had already suffered a nasty beating. Lesnar quickly took Mir down again at the start of the second round, ending the fight with a punishing ground and pound assault that prompted referee Herb Dean to call a stop to the contest at 1:48 of the second round.

Lesnar diminished his dominating performance with his postfight antics”he taunted Mir after the stoppage, prompting the crowd to boo him mercilessly. He followed this with a short and arrogant postfight interview that would have been much more at home in the WWE than in this setting. Mir was the consummate professional in defeat, giving credit to his opponent and generally displaying all of the class that Lesnar lacked.
