Invisible Dental Braces For Adults

Jul 26th, 2009 Posted in medical | no comment »

Teeth straightening braces are fairly common among young people, usually children from around ten years old to sixteen years old. They usually carry connotations of unpopularity in school and the children that wear them have been known to fall prey to playground bullies.

There is an alternative option to having a mouth full of metal if you want straight teeth, and its called Invisalign. In this article I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the Invisalign dental aligners. Essentially, the Invisalign aligners are a transparent plastic mould of your teeth that have been carefully designed to push your teeth into the desired position.

The first and most obvious advantage of the Invisalign treatment is the look of your mouth. The plastic moulds are nearly invisible if people don’t know that they’re there and so you can straighten your teeth naturally and gradually without anyone knowing that you’re having the treatment.

Another advantage is that the Invisalign plastic moulds can be taken out at any time unlike a brace, therefore activities like eating and brushing your teeth are not hindered.

So with the cosmetic appeal and general ease of removal/replacement, as well as the claims that the Invisalign moulds are more comfortable than braces, they are becoming increasingly popular among adults who want straighter teeth but do not want to wear metal braces due to their unattractive nature and the connotations of immaturity that they carry.

Strange though it may sound, the disadvantages include one of the advantages. The fact that the person can remove the aligners at their leisure means that their overall result largely depends on the individuals level of dedication. The aligners could easily be misplaced or the person could forget to put them straight back in after eating and so there is no guarantee for results.

Price is another area where traditional braces have the advantage. The Invisalign aligners are somewhat pricey and will most likely not be available to everyone for some time due to financial constraints.

The aligners themselves are not made of simple plastic, it is made of an implantable grade polyurethane and although very rare, this material has been known to induce allergic and toxic reactions such as sore throat and swelling which in some extremely rare cases has passed down to the wind passages. This, as I mentioned, is a very rare occurrence and usually the results of the Invisalign aligners are very straight, nearly perfect teeth, as long as you use them exactly as instructed and don’t mind paying out for them.

Herniated Disc Pain and Sciatica

Jul 25th, 2009 Posted in medical | no comment »

Having a herniated disc in and of itself can be a very painful condition. When sciatica is a by product of the problem it is even worse. Not only do you have the pain from the disc, but you also have the pain from the swollen and irritated sciatic nerve.

First a herniated disc occurs when the central portion of the disc called the nucleus pulposis migrates outwards and breaks through the outer portion of the disc called the annulus fibrosis.

In research studies only the outer 1/3 of the disc has been shown to contain pain sensitive fibers. Therefore damage can accumulate over time before the person ever feels any pain.

Repetitive activities, incorrect sitting postures and trauma are usually to blame when it comes to herniated disc pain. These activities weaken the outer annulus allowing migration of the inner portion of the disc.

As the migration occurs and the outer fibers become contacted the pain sensitive nerves begin to become activated resulting in local back pain at first.

After the initial bout of back pain from a disc problem occurs a short period of relief or lessened pain may come about. This is usually due to the fact that the activities that caused the problem have been modified or stopped.

Many people make the false assumption that the pain is gone for good, however the medical literature shows a very different scenario. People are almost always destined to have another bout of back pain within a year, unless proper treatment is applied.

With the return of the pain there is also a corresponding increase the the area involved. This usually starts with a movement of the pain into the arm and leg depending on where the disc problem is.

Once pain begins to move into the leg it is often called sciatica. This condition is associated with involvement of the sciatic nerve.

The pain from sciatica can be a consequence of either pressure from the disc itself on the nerve or from inflammation caused by the injured disc irritating the sciatic nerve.

In either case proper treatment is a must. This means actually working to fix the disc problem through proactive means. The best treatment I have come across is for this is spinal decompression.

The outer fibers of the disc are able to scar over due to the negative pressures inside the disc, created with spinal decompression pulling back in the herniated material

Spinal decompression is the best treatment to actually heal a herniated disc relieving sciatica pain.

Invisible Dental Braces For Adults

Jul 25th, 2009 Posted in medical | no comment »

Dental braces are not something anyone particularly wants to have but lots of children have them, usually between the ages of 10 and 16. They are available to adults as well but aren’t very popular among adults because they are very much seen as something that young people have. They are usually associated with the unpopular kid at school and so aren’t a particularly desirable accessory.

There is a possible solution to the problem of having to endure a hideous looking mouth full of metal while your teeth align, and that solution is called Invisalign which I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of over the course of this article. The Invisalign solution consists of a set of see-through plastic moulds for your teeth that will straighten them in a similar fashion to that of a brace but without the mouth full of metal.

Obviously the first advantage of Invisalign is the look. They are clear moulds that sit over your teeth and are very difficult to see and so you can have your teeth straightened naturally using the Invisalign aligners and the chances are nobody would ever know.

Another big plus point for Invisalign is that the aligners can be removed at any time where a brace cant be and so everyday things like brushing your teeth and eating are not affected.

So given all of “Invisalign”s benefits when compared to braces, i.e. their transparency, their ease of replacability, as well as many claims that Invisalign aligners are more comfortable to wear than braces, it is clear to see why they are becoming popular among adults because they do not carry the same embarrassment factor as the traditional metal braces.

The current cost of the Invisalign aligners may be another reason to opt against it. Because the technology is fairly new it is quite costly so it may be a little while before they fully replace the traditional wire brace as the traditional version is more affordable.

The actual aligners are made from an implantable grade polyurethane which has been known (only in very rare cases) to provoke toxic and allergic reactions such as soreness and swelling of the throat which can then (only in even rarer cases) pass down to the wind pipes. However this is extremely rare and the vast majority of people that have undergone the Invisalign treatment end up with nothing but straight teeth provided they have followed the given directions well.

Invisalign’ Transparent Teeth Aligners

Dental braces are not something anyone particularly wants to have but lots of children have them, usually between the ages of 10 and 16. They are available to adults as well but aren’t very popular among adults because they are very much seen as something that young people have. They are usually associated with the unpopular kid at school and so aren’t a particularly desirable accessory.

There is another way however, it is called Invisalign and I will go through the good points and the bad points of this treatment during the course of this article. Invisalign is basically a transparent plastic outline of your teeth that you wear over them and it straightens your teeth much like a traditional brace but without the unappealing mouth of metal.

Obviously the first advantage of Invisalign is the look. They are clear moulds that sit over your teeth and are very difficult to see and so you can have your teeth straightened naturally using the Invisalign aligners and the chances are nobody would ever know.

The second benefit of Invisalign is that they are removable which metal braces are not; therefore they do not hinder everyday oral activities like eating and brushing your teeth.

Now on to the disadvantages and strangely enough, they include one of the advantages. The fact that you can remove the Invisalign aligners at any point means that the overall effectiveness of them depends on how dedicated the individual is. They are only supposed to be removed during eating, drinking and tooth brushing, but people may not remember to put them straight back in or they might misplace them, either way the fact that the person has the choice of when the aligners are in and out means that a lot of the results depend on the individual.

A Modern Alternative To Traditional Dental Braces

Jul 23rd, 2009 Posted in medical | no comment »

Dental braces are a common sight among teenagers and sometimes young adults. They are widely seen as quite unattractive and some of the younger children to have braces sometimes become the victims of playground bullies because of them.

The first benefit of Invisalign is obvious, it looks far more attractive. There is no metal running across your teeth with Invisalign, it is a see through case for your teeth which is almost impossible to see and so you can undergo teeth straightening treatment without anyone knowing.

The second benefit of Invisalign is that they are removable which metal braces are not; therefore they do not hinder everyday oral activities like eating and brushing your teeth.

Another reason that Invisalign may not be the answer to your dental prayers is that it is fairly pricey and for most people, if they’re serious about straightening their teeth, then the traditional braces might be the best option, at least until the prices drop a bit.

The aligners themselves are not made of simple plastic, it is made of an implantable grade polyurethane and although very rare, this material has been known to induce allergic and toxic reactions such as sore throat and swelling which in some extremely rare cases has passed down to the wind passages. Vacutainers – A Simple Invention That Has Changed Medicine Forever

Jul 21st, 2009 Posted in medical | no comment »

A vacutainer is a type of test tube that was originally introduced in 1947 by Joseph Kleiner. Originally known as the Evacutainer, it utilized a special vacuum system, a needle and a test tube to get small amounts of blood from patients.

Kleiner introduced his state of the art invention to Becton, Dickson and company, and it was subsequently patented in 1949. It was later renamed the Vacutainer, as it is still called up to this day.

At the time of its first manufacture, the Vacutainer system had a number of obvious advantages. It was infinitely more convenient for users, it cut down on labor costs to a large extent and there were a lot fewer breakages because the tubes were made from a more durable kind of glass.

The first patenting of the Vacutainer in 1949 coincided with the unveiling of Becton, Dickson’s second production plant in the USA. In 1950, the company’s revenues reached upwards of 16 million.

Vacutainers are usually used in the process of taking blood from a patient for examinations. When a Vacutainer is used to take blood from a patient, the vein is punctured by a hypodermic needle. The needle is contained in a plastic tube, which also has a needle on the opposite end that is held in a plastic holder.

All Vacutainer vessels have a rubber cap. When it is time to get blood from the patient the container is pressed onto the needle in the holder so it pierces the cap. The difference in pressure then pulls blood from the patient into the test tube until it fills. The container of blood can then be taken away for examination. If needed, a new test tube can be put onto the needle for an additional blood sample.

In many cases the vessels that are used in the Vacutainer system already hold certain additives. These substances generally aid in the testing of blood, or have some other use. For example, a test tube may contain an additive that will help preserve particular elements in the blood, or a substance that helps in separating the blood cells from the serum.

In general, a Vacutainer test tube will hold coagulants, anti-coagulants, or will contain no additive at all. There are a lot of different types of additives used in the process, depending on the cause for the blood test. If a container with the wrong substance is used, it may render the blood test useless.

Therefore, the test tubes’ caps are coded with different colors, depending on which kind of substance they contain. The color-code system is standardized across all Vacutainer producers to prevent confusion.

In addition to being color-coded, the Vacutainer test tubes’ caps can either be opaque or clear. This illustrates whether a normal suction level is being used (opaque) or, in the case of clear caps, a weaker suction is suitable. Lower suction levels are often more suitable for smaller blood vessels.
