Student Enrollments Projections 2011
Nov 5th, 2010 Posted in education | no comment »Total student enrollment projections for 2011 are expected to increase over what we have seen so far, while recent times have been pushing the actual numbers ahead of the projection rates stated 10 years ago. This is believed to be done to the recent sink in the economy, forcing potential students to realize the need for a higher degree currently. While the job market currently has a high number of vacancies, you usually need a high level of degrees before you will be considered for most, as there is not much in the entry-level field. That is believed to be forcing students to realize that getting a job is becoming harder with each passing month and year, so they are staying in school working towards higher degrees than we have seen in the past.
Even with the overall increase in total student enrollment, it is projected to have a loss in the crowd of older people coming back to enroll in school to finish their degrees. This is believed to be due to the need for such high degrees forcing them to rethink spending more years than they had intended to get a degree to compete with the younger generation.
With the increase in students taking higher degrees than we have seen before it is believed it will also continue to affect the job market, with more and more companies requiring even higher degrees for the same positions that where filled, by people with lower degrees or sometimes no degree at all. This can be a good thing for the schools continually forcing more students into an already thriving market. However, at the same time, can force more and more recent graduates through a tougher time looking for jobs in a harder job market than when they first started looking.
While some studies have showed there to be only a small monetary gain from going for the higher degrees, it has not stopped students from going after these increasingly harder to get degrees. Even with the rising cost of tuition and total school cost on the rise, they are still expecting a rise in student enrollment throughout the year, and into 2011.
What has been seen as an interesting development so far is the amount of students taking to online courses and studies while working a full time, or part time job at the same time. While many believe this to be a high contributing factor in the overall percentage increase in students for the last years, and continued growth into 2010, and possible into 2011. Many students find it easier to take online courses while managing their normal work life and family lives at the same time, when considering the alternative of driving sometimes-long distances to a college or university. The ability to manipulate ones study schedule to fit your personal life rather than try to fit your life to your studies is a big contributing factor in increasing students for the next few years to come, while it may be viewed sometimes as an inferior way to teach students since they are able to write their own schedule out. While the field of online education has had a steady increase, and shows no signs of slowing down in the following years to come, as long as job requirements continue to increase at a steady pace over the coming years.
What has been an interesting development is that not only has students increased in the upper tier of education (example: university, college,) we have seen a large increase in students starting as far back as pre-school all the way through to college. It is certain now days parents and students are paying more attention to their studies and the value an education brings to their future, and future careers. Even with this large growth there is still expected to be another large percentage increase in students enrolling for the next few years, to keep up with the overall pace set by the preceding years.
Not all of the increase in student enrollment can be pinned on the economy or increasing difficulty in the job market, some of it is from lower requirements to move up to the next tier of education. Providing students with no reason while they cannot move on to a much better degree and education that was just not seen in the past years, this can be a major factor in the huge spikes that we have seen over the last 10 years in enrollment growth rate.
Since the advent of the computer and the internet, and now with them being so common in almost every home, it is no wonder education is on the rise when you can do research and compare to actual accredited resources easier than was ever possible before. As long as technology continues to make our lives easier and simpler, we will continue to grow our education level as time goes on.
While a continued reliance on technology can be very prosperous to the individual involved in his/her studies, you must remember the previous generation of students who have long since been passed up by this technology. Sometimes forcing them to come back to play a sort of catch-up to the newer generation trying to keep up to date with all of the modern terms and workings that are employed in everyday business.
