Is the electoral college promote true democracy?

ihatevfsf asked:

I understand that if we used the Popular Vote the candidates would never visit small states but there has to be a better reason. “Swing States” still get to vote, they have senators, congressmen, etc. I’m just sick of the candidates not paying attention to most of America.
Does* the electoral college promote true democracy?

Wrong. if we abolish the electoral college, all votes count the same. So candidates will court all votes not just the bigger states with more electors

We are a Republic, not a true democracy. I think over the years the electoral college has served us well. Without it, candidates would only go to NY.California and Texas

The electoral college works. It’s as simple as that. Other alternatives, like popular vote, don’t work as well.

Don’t think of the Presidential election as one big contest. There are 51 separate elections (50 states plus DC). THis makes the smaller states just as important in the long run.

Back in the 1980’s The Phoenix Suns played the Chicago Bulls for the NBA championship, IN a six game series, the Suns outscored the Bulls by something like 10 or 20 points, but the Bulls still won the Championship by winning four games and losing 2. The total baskets scored counted, but didn’t decide the outcome of the series. The same thing happens with the 51 separate elections on election day. ONe candidate more total more popular votes, yet still loose. This has happened several times in History, not just in 2000. It’s rare, but it does happen.

Now the USA has been using this system for over 200 years now. THere has been talk about replacing the system with a direct popular vote, but it never goes much beyond the talking stage. Why? Because the powers that be realize that the Electoral College is a good system, and still works the way the Founding Fathers envisioned it.

Your mistake is suggesting the America is a true democracy. It is NOT, it is a democratic republic. Candidates pay more attention to smalltown america under the electoral system than they would under a “pure” democracy. For an excellent discussion of this and why the electoral college is vitally necessary, see
